Regular lifetime licenses with new major versions is still the best for users and developers if they want to retain users. It offers much less value for the user though. Then Apple started pushing SaaS subscriptions because it makes apple more money and it make developers a shit ton of money. For more specialized software it's trickier, but that's why it's more expensive. That scrabble like game developer is still making bank years and years later. There's such a continuous stream of new users. Then Apple started pushing for lifetime software. Security updates would be outside both and count the same. In fact it's less because it's a lot less overhead. Developing "big" versions is the same investment as trickle SaaS updates.
